đ§My Experience with 3 Unpaid Internships, Non-STEM, in the U.S. I'd like to share my three unpaid internship experiences during my student years. I hope they can be helpful or inspiring to students, especially those from non-STEM major like me.To briefly summarize my mediocređ academic journey: I initially attended a community college and participated in the Running Start program (which allows Washington State students to earn college credits starting 16 Years Old). I then transferred to the UW Bothell campus for a degree in Communications. After graduating, I worked full-time for a short period before returning to UW Foster School of Business for a year of graduate studies.**Autumn 2018 at a Recruiting Agency**My first unpaid internship was at a headhunting company. There were four or five employees, and I worked as a Project Manager responsible for a new job-seeking project. Although the project didn't ultimately launch, the boss recognized my dedication and began paying me $15 per hour. This job didn't involve actual recruitment but exposed me to the recruitment process as I observed other colleagues.**Winter 2018 at a Private Equity Fund**I found an unpaid remote internship with a Private Equity company on Handshake. In reality, this company had acquired some funds and needed to acquire a business, not a typical PE Fund. I pursued it because of my prior internship in Venture Capital. My role was to use LinkedIn scraping tools to find companies for potential acquisition. It was my first exposure to LinkedIn and paved the way for the future. However, I wouldn't recommend this internship as it was mostly about teaching me how to use LinkedIn scraping tools, and had no office or colleagues. I eventually removed it from my resume.**Autumn 2019 at on Online Assessment Startup**My third internship was with an early-stage startup during my graduate studies. The team members were all in their early twenties, highly talented, and passionate of what we do. After graduating, the company entered an incubator and quickly secured funding. They specialized in online assessments for data-related roles, similar to HackerRank, targeting HR departments. While not directly related to recruitment, it gave me some insight into the recruitment process. They initially offered this internship as UW reached out to them asking them to create learning opportunities for students. They proactively stared paying me $20 per hour after the first several months seeing my dedication and commitment. The company was later acquired, but I still maintain a strong connection with the team. I highly recommend it! This was my last job before the pandemic hit.https://lnkd.in/gCBSbqWG

đ¨ Beware of Internship Scams: Take your time with Pay-to-Play Offers! đŤđđť Here's What Students Need to Know đŠđđ¨đQ. Should a student pay for being an intern in a cheap company? - Freaking NOT!!! đŤđđťCase Study:So, these so-called companies visit campuses for students, saying that doing their internship will add value to their resumes and offering them internships for around Rs. 5,000, which some students commit to due to FOMO and job uncertainty. In this situation,We are left with only one solution,Unpaid Internships.Sometimes, I wonder what if-âžThe recruiters gives priority to 'skills' rather than 4 years of experience, I have seen people with 'great skills' with 'no designation' or work.âžA company pays you even if you are a fresher.âžThe job description of internships also includes a 'fixed pay' rather than 'performance based'.âžThe companies propose an alternative models for internships, such as paid internships, stipends, or, academic credit arrangements. This way the candidate will get a 'decent pay' along with the 'required experience'.P.S - Being an intern for a nonprofit organization is out of this issue.LinkedIn Guide to Creating #Unpaid #internship #freelabour #collegestudents #oppurtunities #humour #personaldevelopment

Companies are exploiting college students who are looking for paid internships đ°While unpaid internships still exist for the sake of âwork experienceâ, Many companies offering âpaid internshipsâ expect students to work at the placement level for months, just for a traditional single-day pay. â¨Yes I know experience defines pay, But students who are putting in 4-5 hours, 6 days a week in a company that doesnât value their time, should be paid according to the work that theyâre doing, especially when it can be measured; And students opt for these internships because there arenât many âpaid internshipsâ right?â¨Time is money; Labour is money;Especially for college students who are in an uncomfortable place in life where they want to study but at the same time be independent. â¨Iâve come across so many internship notifications that expect the student to put in 4-5 hours per day for 2 months, while still being enrolled in a full time degree, and at the end the companies are only willing to pay them 1k for their entire tenure. Itâs ridiculous. In the name of âinternshipsâ, companies are getting a lot of work done without spending a lot of their money. Convenient. â¨If you canât pay students well, donât expect them to devote a large chunk of their time for your work. Lower your requirementsAndStop exploiting students. LinkedIn for Creators

I will never hire an intern...Every company that hires an intern is a liar...The silent war between interns and companies is missing the point. It's not about wages or workloads.Companies, if you're taking in an intern, commit to teaching them, it's your responsibility since you took them under your wings. It's not an internship if they're just cheap labor. It is then exploitation. On the flip side, interns, seeking pay over experience misses the mark. It is like investing in your education, not just earning a paycheck. Internships are not just jobs; they are educational experiences. Rather pay them back with whatever possible, be it money, effort, commitment or even some kind of service.Don't lie to each other and then blame the other afterwards. What are your thoughts about it?....#designintern #internship #designinternship

THE UNSAID OF UNPAID INTERNSHIPSYou will surely find numerous people saying unpaid internships are useless. But, is it really true?Yes, itâs true. *(Terms & Conditions Applied). What are these T&C?I agree paid internships are always betterâŚnot in the sense of financial benefit but when any company is paying you, they will grill you to get the best value. Thatâs where you improve.T&C bhi bata hi dete hainâŚThe unpaid internships are unjustified, unless-⢠They provide you with real exposure to the industry or domain. If you are really enhancing your skillset, nothing is a better payment than that.⢠They are from a big brand (no second thought about that brand name will help you in future).⢠Itâs your first few internships. Itâs very difficult to crack paid ones with an empty CV, so start with unpaid ones (especially freshers).⢠You are working with founders. Early age startups wonât be able to provide paid internships, but they will get you to work with founders themselves. And nothing is better than that because they are the people you can learn from the most about their passion, zeal, industry knowledge, hustle, etc. For me, thatâs the best thing to learn from internships. (Exceptions are Sales and BD roles, they just want their product to be sold).Trust me, in your future there are only two things that matter-⢠Firstly, you. If you have that skill, knowledge and experience, it can be seen in you, your behaviour and your work.⢠Secondly, the certificate. Not the important one but still important because CV m likhne ke liye kuch to proof chahiye. (Everywhere the first round is CV shortlisting, so it's needed).PS- Share your thoughts in the comments below. ⏠#exposure #learnings

Let's discuss!!! Topic for the week: Paid vs Unpaid internshipsWhy does everyone prefer paid internships but not unpaid internships? Internships are to gain practical knowledge and to make our foundation strong in the desired domain right?I understand that the only difference between both is the Salary which you will be receiving and it'll help financially in paid internshipsEven though there might be some thing when unpaid internships are offered we think this might be Fraud, it's common that everyone thinks even me myself used to think, when I was looking for internships, but I was wrong there are some companies who offer genuinelyBut the learning you get in both paid and unpaid internships is the same in the internships right industrial exposure, practical knowledge or experience, clarity towards future career.... and moreEven from my experience, I even tried to apply for many paid internships but in those they kept asking for experience, which I don't have basically, that's why I'm applying for an internship to gain experience and to showcase my skills, to improve myself even if I'm rejected I should be able to know what are the areas that I need to improve so it'll help us develop professionally as well as personallyI would like to ask this question to everyone but I would like to focus this on freshers, graduates and post graduates who are currently pursuingEveryone is free to give their opinions, please share your opinions on these below đ comment section
