How do you adjust the flame on a Heatilator gas fireplace? ›

Typical models have a port behind a screw cap on the outgoing side of the valve (just beyond the knob) that either a slotted screwdriver or an Allen wrench can be used to adjust the flame. Clockwise for less flame and counter clockwise for larger flame.

Should Heatilator fireplace doors be opened or closed while the fire is burning? Open. Burning a fire in a Heatilator zero clearance firebox with closed doors could reach a temperature approaching 10,000 degrees and fires can eventually start at temps as low as 200 degrees and cause closed doors shatter.

Hit the Ignition

Locate your fireplace's ignition switch—a red button near the control knob or a switch labeled “ignitor.” While you're holding down the control knob, click the ignition switch once every second until the pilot light is lit. This may take several attempts.

The pilot knob should have the options “Off,” “Pilot” and, in some models, “On.” Here's how to light a gas fireplace with a control panel. Turn the knob from the “Off” to the “Pilot” position. Push in the pilot knob, which manually sends gas into the system. Push the igniter button once every second until it lights.

Heatilator fireplaces, also known as "old-style zero clearance fireplaces", are a combination of heater and ventilator and are by their nature, fireplaces that circulate air. Old-Style Heatilator Fireplaces use a special venting system that draws in cool room air and releases it as warmer air.

To adjust air shutter: • Loosen the screw on the burner assembly. To close the air shutter, turn shutter clockwise. To open air shutter, turn shutter counterclockwise. Tighten the screw.

The model and serial numbers are located on a “rating plate,” which is a metal plate that's usually permanently affixed to the fireplace, insert or stove. In gas fireplaces, the rating plate is found in the controls area.

The damper must be in the fully open position when using a wood-burning fireplace. Partially closing the flue (chimney) damper can cause smoke to spill into the room when burning wood, or cause carbon monoxide (CO) to come into the room when using gas logs.

Increased Air Flow – Keeping the doors opened allows for better oxygen supply, resulting in a more vibrant fire. Intense Heat – With more oxygen, the fire burns hotter and brighter, providing a powerful source of warmth.

Prevent carbon monoxide (CO) build-up.

When using a fireplace, CO could potentially build-up inside your home, especially if your chimney is clogged with debris. An open window can help to vent the gas, and this is especially important in newer homes that were likely built with airtight construction techniques.

Should gas fireplace glass be hot when off? ›

It's easy for someone to enter a room when the fireplace is off not knowing it was recently burning. This is especially true if it is controlled by a thermostat. The glass can remain dangerously hot for up to an hour after the fireplace or fireplace insert has been turned off.

Many gas fireplaces made by Heatilator have IntelliFire™ intermittent pilot ignition systems with battery backups that can be used to light the pilot and flames during power outages. Consult your model's owner's manual (available online) or local hearth dealer for more information and instructions.

The fireplace can be operated by a touch panel or switch, usually located on the top or side of the unit. One tab will turn it on/off and other buttons will turn the heat on/off and adjust the liveliness of the flames. Another way to start your electric fireplace is with a remote control.
