AEW Rampage Results: Winners, Live Grades, Reaction, Highlights From Oct. 27 (1)

    Rampage. AEW

Welcome to Bleacher Report's live coverage and recap of AEW Rampage on October 27.

For the first time in what feels like years, Abadon was booked to fight on TV as she stepped into the ring for a Fatal 4-Way with Willow Nightingale, Anna Jay and Skye Blue to see which one of them would get a women's title shot on Collision.

Kyle Fletcher and Konosuke Takesh*ta squared off, but the biggest grudge match on the card was easily the fight between Santana and Ortiz.

The former Proud and Powerful teammates have been bitter rivals in recent months, so this match is the culmination of all that pent-up anger.

Let's take a look at what happened on Friday's show.

Mike Satana vs. Ortiz

1 of 4

Santana and Ortiz were standing in the ring staring at each other when the show went live. The bell rang and they were slow to get going, but once they did, they immediately hit the gas.

This was a No Disqualification match, so they wasted no time getting some weapons from under the ring. Ortiz was the first to utilize a weapon when he unloaded on his former best friend with a kendo stick.

They did a great job making this feel more like a personal fight than a professional wrestling match. The promos and video packages have built up this feud well in recent weeks, but none of that was going to matter if they didn't stick the landing.

    Ortiz won't give up!<br><br>Watch <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/AEWRampage?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#AEWRampage</a> ON TNT!<a href="https://twitter.com/Ortiz_Powerful?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@ortiz_powerful</a> | <a href="https://twitter.com/Santana_Proud?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@santana_proud</a> <a href="https://t.co/rGSzEzUoBN">pic.twitter.com/rGSzEzUoBN</a>

Both men did a great job selling both the physical action and the emotion behind everything. In some ways, this feels like the most important match we have seen on Rampage in a long time.

Santana scored a decisive win, but this doesn't feel like the end of this storyline. With any luck, a Proud and Powerful reunion is where this will eventually lead. For some reason, Sonjay Dutt came out to talk to Ortiz after the match and whispered something that appeared to get Ortiz to follow him backstage.

    Result: Mike Santana defeated Ortiz

    Grade: B+

    Notable Moments and Observations

    • This might be one of the only situations where starting the show with both men in the ring staring at each other is preferable to seeing them have normal entrances. Somehow, it added to the level of tension to see them staring right at each other when the show began.
    • Santana hit a nice moonsault from the middle rope to the floor.
    • The suplex Santana hit from the apron to the floor onto a pile of chairs was a nasty spot.
    • The sequence with both men countering and reversing moves until they both hit a clothesline was fantastic.

Skye Blue vs. Willow Nightingale vs. Anna Jay vs. Abadon

2 of 4

Kip Sabian came out with Penelope Ford to play the heel in front of the Philadelphia crowd until Mark Briscoe came out to shut him up. He sent Sabian out of the ring with a clothesline and posed for the crowd to end the quick segment.

A Fatal 4-Way for a shot at the AEW Women's Championship took place this week when Blue, Nightingale, Jay and Abadon stepped into the ring.

Kris Statlander tried to have a talk with Skye and Willow backstage about their attitudes since Julia Hart misted them. We also got an interview with Anna, but Abadon didn't do one because the character never speaks.

A couple of minutes into the match, Toni Storm showed up with Luther to watch the match from the stage.

Since adopting a new attitude, Skye Blue has been ruthless. <br>Will her newly found aggression put her over the top in tonight's 4-way match?<br><br>Watch <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/AEWRampage?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#AEWRampage</a> ON TNT!<a href="https://twitter.com/Skyebyee?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@skyebyee</a> <a href="https://t.co/Slxk7laHDq">pic.twitter.com/Slxk7laHDq</a>

The first half of this bout had a few spots that felt awkward, but the second half was much better and showed all four competitors in a much better light.

In an outcome many would call an upset, Abadon was able to score the win by pinning Anna to get the pin and earn a title shot.

    Result: Abadon pinned Anna Jay

    Grade: B-

    Notable Moments and Observations

    • We got a great video package for MJF vs. Kenny Omega before this bout took place.
    • Willow's makeup around her left eye was much darker than it has been in recent weeks. AEW is really leaning into the mist angle.
    • The juxtaposition of Blue wearing bright gear and having upbeat entrance music with her dark attitude has made her much more interesting.
    • It was nice to see AEW using Abadon again. Their character is truly unique in AEW and can be used in interesting ways if booked right.

Kyle Fletcher vs. Konosuke Takesh*ta

Last week, Don Callis was praising Fletcher all throughout his match with Kenny Omega, but began insulting him the moment he lost. This led to Callis Family member Takesh*ta taking on Fletcher in the main event of this week's Rampage.

They started with a quick exchange of takedowns and counters. These men are evenly matches in almost every way. They have similar physiques and height, similar styles in the ring and similar levels of experience. Takesh*ta has a few years on Fletcher, but both men started their journey as teenagers.

These two also know each other very well, so this felt like one of the most evenly-matched sets of opponents we have seen in a long time.

Takesh*ta ended up scoring a clean win over Fletcher with a huge knee to the face. The most surprising thing about this was that Callis and Hobbs didn't do anything to give Takesh*ta an advantage.

    Unbelievable display of Fighting Spirit from Takesh*ta and Fletcher!<br><br>Watch <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/AEWRampage?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#AEWRampage</a> ON TNT!<a href="https://twitter.com/Takesoup?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@Takesoup</a> | <a href="https://twitter.com/kylefletcherpro?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@kylefletcherpro</a> <a href="https://t.co/C49Es8raXg">pic.twitter.com/C49Es8raXg</a>

Fletcher attacked Takesh*ta and Hobbs with a chair after they threw him out of the ring, but Callis stopped Hobbs from beating him up. He tried to use it as an opportunity to recruit Fletcher into his family. The 24-year-old hesitated but appeared to accept the offer.

    Result:

    Grade:

    Notable Moments and Observations

    • Tony Schiavone and Callis' level of hatred toward each other is approaching Michael Cole and Bayley levels of animosity.
    • Powerhouse Hobbs standing behind Callis with no shirt and a pair of leather gloves was an intimidating sight.

The Final Word

4 of 4

Some episodes of Rampage can feel like they are mostly filler, but this week's show made sure every segment advanced an ongoing storyline.

Ortiz and Santana opened the show with a physical bout that didn't come close to ending their story but moved it forward in the right direction.

The Fatal 4-Way bout had a genuinely surprising outcome with Abadon getting the win, but it also helped make the story with Willow and Skye more interesting.

Ending the show with Callis recruiting an angry Fletcher possibly joining the Don Callis Family was a good way to wrap things up. All in all, this was a stronger episode of Rampage than we have seen in months.
